BACOLOD City solidified their hold of the number one spot with a hard-earned 3-2 win over Don Bosco College (DBC) - FFC, while defending champion Hiroshi FC blanked Foundation University, 3-0, in the yesterday’s 6th Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament Men’s Open at the University of San Carlos – Technological Center.

The West Negros College-manned Bacolod now hold the number one spot with nine points, on a 3-0 mark, while Hiroshi dislodged DBC at second on goal difference.

DBC paid dearly for their loose markings on the defensive end as Robert Cañedo struck twice, as Bacolod took a 3-1 lead with less than 30 minutes left to play. DBC, managed to come within one, 3-2, but the WNC defense held on, while veterans Glen Ramos and Reydrick Viliran, who joined the game in the final 20 minutes failed to turn the tide.

“Na-byaan sa depensa ang striker,” Ramos said after the match.

Ramos and Bacolod playing coach, Norman Fegidero, both former national team mainstays, also got a little too physical and got booked for a yellow card late in the match.

Meanwhile host Queen City United finally bagged a win of their own with a 5-0 dumping of Ormoc, keeping their semifinal hopes alive.

After dropping their first two matches to DBC and Bacolod, Queen City now sits at fourth spot, dislodging Foundation University by five goals.

Former Hiroshi mainstays Martin Bontia and Josaphat Sacil scored the first two goals for Queen City before Marlon Rey Baring scored twice and Bong Aller converted a penalty for their win.

On the other hand, Hiroshi’s new recruit Arndt Kollmar came up with a few saves yesterday in their 3-0 win. After strikers Junard Aguilar, Epifanio Ynot bungled their early chances, including Ynot’s strike the hit the bar, Kollmar’s reflex save prevented Dumaguete from taking the early lead.

Ynot finally struck in the 39th for a 1-0 halftime lead and John Paul Arranquez and Jake Acre added one each in the second half for their win.

Hiroshi will play West Negros today while Queen City takes on Dumaguete and Don Bosco faces Ormoc.

In the ladies’ division at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field, the Ladies Football Club-CDO cruised to their third win, a 2-1 escape over Mulbachs while San Roque defeated Ormoc, 2-1, on goals by Rhodora Toledo and Jack Elnar.

In the 38-above division, Ormoc defeated Hiroshi, 4-1, while DBC and Queen City fought to a 2-2 draw.

Hiroshi gets new recruits for Inter Club

AFTER losing 11 of its players to suspensions, travel abroad and other reasons, embattled Cebu Invitational Inter-Club defending champion Hiroshi Football Club
got a couple of breaks with the addition of a Cameroonian and Fil-German players as it prepares to defend its crown today at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center.

Siam Thirrey, a Hong Kong-based footballer from Cameroon stumbled upon the Hiroshi website and offered his services to the team.

“He’s not with any club right now, and he’s doing this for the experience. He will take care of the expenses coming here, while he is willing to stay with the boys in their quarters,” assistant coach Francis Ramirez said.

Though they have included Thirrey in their lineup, the player hasn’t arrived yet, though he has promised to contact the team once he gets here.

On the other hand, Hiroshi’s practice session at the Cebu City Sports Center, the City’s lone track oval which attracts joggers daily, attracted another recruit – Fil-German, Arntt Kollmare.

“He jogs here everyday, and he got to join our practices,” Ramirez said.

Last January, Italian Demetrio Calo, also got to join Hiroshi via the same route.

“He’s quite good, and he’s very mature in his movements, minaro ba,” Ramirez said.

With Kollmare’s entry, Hiroshi’s first choice keeper, Frederick Alazas, will again play midfield, while sub-keeper Ace Mangohig will now play in the 38-above
division.

Aside from the two, Hiroshi’s reinforcements this year are from University of the Visayas, Benjor Gomora and Epifanio Ynot, and from their 18-under squad, Howard Doline and John Paul Arranquez.

Hiroshi FC, which won the crown last year over Don Bosco FC, is playing minus suspended players Harold Buot, Rommel Cuizon, Ariel Cahilig, Richard Romero and Vermonel Resuena, who got penalized for getting in a fight during the Thirsty Cup last January.

They also lost former Carmen National School players Josaphat Sacil and Martin Bontia, who have now rejoined former coach Mario Ceniza at Queen City, while they also dropped brothers Michael and Melvin Culibra, who have stopped attending their training sessions and regulars Voltaire Monetbon, Rocky Garciano, Jan Michael Flores and Buddy Verdida are currently in Japan.

Meanwhile, the organizers and coaches of the 2006 Inter-Club were set to meet at Tequilla Joe’s last night for the draw and their final meeting. The Men’s Open, which dangles P45,000 to the champion, will be played at USC, while the ladies and 38-above divisions will be at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field in Ayala.

Queen City completes lineup for Inter-Club

THE QUEEN City United added two former University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars to its lineup for this Cebu Inter-Club Invitational Tournament set on April 28 to May 6 at different football fields in the city.

Queen City, coached by Mario Ceniza signed up Hentjie Ruiz, who played for national champion Bacolod in the 2006 Philippine Football Federation National Men’s Open and goalkeeper Jesus Singson Jr.

Queen City, the host club in the tournament, is boosting its lineup to bolster its chances of winning the Men’s Open of the Inter-Club and the cool P45,000 winner-take-all purse.

The club has also signed up striker Ronald Loayon, who once scored seven goals for Metropolitan against FC Lapu-Lapu in the Aboitiz League Division B.

Completing the offensive force for Queen City are Eleazar Toledo, formerly of San Roque FC, Dexter Arrojado and Marlon Rey Baring, who also scored five goals for Queen City against FC Lapu-Lapu.

The club has also combined youth with their veterans after Ceniza’s former wards at Carmen National School, Martin Bontia, Josapahat Sacil, Ivan Dimco, Jack Reston, Agustin Bardinas and Ronald Mahilum joined the team.

Striker and former Carmen mainstay Junard Aguilar is staying with Hiroshi FC, who are also set to see action in the Inter-Club, its first tournament in Cebu since the aborted semifinal against Crazy Horse in the Thirsty Cup last year.

The other Cebu team in the six-team Men’s Open is Hapee, coached by former national team mainstay Glen Ramos, while expected to give the home teams a run for their money are visitors West Negros College and Dumaguete.

“On paper, WNC is the best team and they also have Oliver Colina with them, while I’m not so sure with Dumaguete since I don’t know its lineup yet,” Ceniza said.

Colina, who is also from San Roque, was part of the Under-23 national team training pool last year.

Cebu sweeps football crowns

CEBU City swept the elementary and high school football crowns in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association in Bohol yesterday.

Francis Ramirez and the Abellana National High School bagged the secondary crown after some heroics from Michael Sharpe and Paolo Pascual in their 3-0 shootout win over Negros Oriental, while the Don Bosco College led elementary team, coached by Joselito Bono, eked out a hard-earned 1-0 win over Tagbilaran.

“Naswertehan jud, na-break na ang jinx sa shootout sa Cviraa,” said Ramirez.

Cebu City, who enjoyed a twice-to-beat incentive yesterday, found themselves a goal down after the 24th minute of the first half, before Sharpe banged in the equalizer just seconds from full time, blasting just inside the penalty box to send the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, Kyle Soriano converted his shot, while Negros kicker the bar. Sharpe scored his second goal in the shootout before Pascual pulled back-to-back saves and Jerome Batad banged in the final goal for their ecstatic win.

“Paolo (Pascual) really played very well, he had many saves,” said Ramirez, “This erases the bitter memory of the 1992 shootout loss, and in 1997, when we had eight players who eventually made it to the national team, but also lost by shootout.”

In their match against Negros last Friday, Pascual also had two saves in their 3-1 shootout win.

Ramirez and his team arrives from Bohol today and will take a two-day rest before they resume training on Wednesday for the Palarong Pambansa.

“We will pick up the left winger and another midfielder from Negros for the Palaro,” Ramirez said.
