A HEFTY crowd of football players will congregate in the two-day football 3rd Mizuno Football Fiesta which will kickoff on Sept. 13 and 14 at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center football grounds.

This year’s installment of the Mizuno football festival has attracted 209 teams from different clubs and schools in Cebu City and three from San Carlos City and a lady team from Bacolod.

“This year’s tournament is much bigger than last year’s tournament. Last year’s participants were about 160 to 170 teams,” said Don Bosco United Football Club’s Jim Karl Akiatan, one of the organizers of the Mizuno tournament.

This tournament will showcase 11 categories – Players 6, Players 8, Players 10, Boys 12, Girls 12, Boys 14, Girls 14, Boys 17, Girls 17, Ladies Open, Men’s Open and the 38 and above categories.

The only thing missing in this year’s tournament is the 19-under division which was eliminated due to the scarcity of teams in that age bracket.

On the first day, there will be a formal opening at 7 a.m. followed by the games of the Players 6 to 10, Boys and Girls 12, 14, and Girls 17 categories while the Ladies Open, 38 and above and the much awaited Men’s Open, in which 44 teams are competing against each other, will be on the following day.

The champions of the contest will be receiving a trophy and individual medals while the 1st runner-ups will be given individual medals.

This football festival is sponsored by Mizuno and organized by Akiatan and Dexter Arrojado of Queen City United. (EKA)

SRFC Girls rule Bacolod Uriarte Cup

THE San Roque Football Club Girls 17-team overcame some sloppy work in a penalty shootout to rule the 4th Gus Uriarte Memorial Football Festival in Bacolod City last weekend.

Coached by Eleazer Toledo, the 12-girl team finished unscathed in the elimination round before facing San Carlos City in the semifinals.

The team, bannered by Monica and Maritoni Trebol, Renee Songalia, Jackie Ting, Elsie Ann Juezan, Angeli Ruete, KC Catarenen, Shandra Gail Colina, Cheska Jane Toledo, Ayana Gaitera, Maricris Tira–do and Aleli Mejias, found itself trailing 1-0 in the first eight minutes.

Ting equalized a few minutes after an impressive first touch allowed her to redirect Songalia’s cross to force the extension. After a scoreless extension, the match went to shootout and San Roque seemed headed to an early exit as Ruete’s brilliance between the posts was matched by futility

by Songalia, Mari–toni and Juezan, who all missed their penalties.
In the sudden-death shootout, Monica, who earned the MVP, converted her spot kick for the winning goal and arranged a championship with University of St. La Salle.

Juezan redeemed herself in the final after scoring the winning goal just four minutes into the game for the title.

Earlier in the elimination round, San Roque drew with La Salle, 1-1; blasted SSB Foundation 4-0; blanked Taytung, 2-0; and sneaked past Domingo Lacson, 1-0.

Meanwhile, national team skipper Emilio Caligdong lead West Negros A to the Men’s Open crown over West Negros B, while San Car–los FC won the Women’s Open
title.

The event was organized by the USLS Varsity and Alumni football team headed by Rani Teresa Alisan and Daisy Jane Dayon.

Sykes football

The SYKES 2008 Involve Football Tournament opened up with a BANG! The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Cebu Football Association President Richard Montayre, who, thanked the players for their support in promoting the sport in the country and encourage them to join the upcoming CebuFA tournaments.

Despite a yearlong hiatus, each team displayed the true meaning of “For the love of the game.” Team RED and Team GREEN were both scoreless in 10 minutes into game 1. Mark Limpag had the first scoring opportunity for Team GREEN via penalty but Sherwin Ngujo was quick enough to deflect the kick and the followup. Romuel Balintag (MVP, 2006 Tournament) scored two goals for Team RED near the end of the first half. Team GREEN pushed for goals on the second half, attacking from both wings and the middle, prompting Balintag to help the defense. Team GREEN’s efforts finally paid off when Juvelon Soria sneaked past Team RED’s defense and found the back of the net. The game ended 2-1 in favor of Team RED.

Team BLACK dumped CSI (7-2) in game 2 bagging their first win for the tournament. Vince Rendon scored 2 goals and David De Madrazo added one more to seal their lead early in the first half. Kathrina Bejec scored 2 goals after getting a through pass from Dori Jay Bontilao. Juvelon Soria scored a header for Team WHITE from a corner kick well into the second half. Dori Jay Bontilao scored 2 goals after a beautiful set-up from her Dial teammates. Kristian Perez managed to sneak in a counter attack and shot below the bar, scoring the second goal for Team WHITE just before the end of the game.

Composed of mostly new players, Team LIGHT BLUE started strong this year, surprising the audience with a good display of defense. S/G Allan Daclan together with Brian Villafuerte and Eleazar Montemayor led the attacks against Team DARK BLUE but they could not break the Rabaya-Canama-Lavadia defense. Team DARK BLUE had numberous chances including a well-timed header from Sherwin Arnade but goalkeeper John Obed Enojardo was always alert and did not allow a chance of scoring a goal. A foul by Team LIGHT BLUE changed their fate, allowing Adriane Canama to score the first goal for Team DARK BLUE from the penalty spot. Jay Perasol scored the second goal on a breakaway and Julius Besana shot the third past the goalie off an assist from Canama. Game 3 ended with Team DARK BLUE blanking Team LIGHT BLUE (3-0).

* A goal by female player is equivalent to 2 goals.

Lack of practice pays off for Pinoysoccer.com

Courtesy of Sun.Star Cebu (again) by UP Mass Comm Intern Eva Marie Gamboa

THE Don Bosco Pinoysoccer.com team didn’t think they had a big chance of winning the 8th National Inter-Club Football Tournament since compared to the other teams who practiced everyday, they only got to practice “once in a blue moon” and with three or more members absent.

The one-week tournament was so far the biggest event organized by the Cebu Football Association (CFA) and was attended by teams from outside Cebu and was graced by the presence of the Philippine national team.

During the Scoop forum with Bobby Inoferio, Don Bosco Pinoysoccer.com shared the challenges the squad faced.

“The players had no commitment (with the team) because some of them are working,” said Warloo Sabella, one of the team members.

The members of the team were selected from different schools and clubs, but they were able to project a certain “chemistry” on the field.

“The team is already a selection in itself,” said Br. Jose Ma. Aberastori of Don Bosco Boys Home.

Don Bosco couldn’t find enough members for their team so they selected players from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Iligan City, Don Bosco Alumni and other clubs.

They defeated FC Inter Lapu-Lapu, 20-0, on their first game, scored 4-3 against Davao and then defeated Dipolog, 3-0.

After their Inter Club win the team will represent Cebu in the Men’s Regionals.

Once the new Aboitiz field is also up and running, Martinez also promised to have an international tournament in Cebu, involving the 40-above teams of Southeast Asian clubs and countries.

He also said that the AFC will have their experts go around the country to look at and eventually design grassroots development program which will be in line with Vision Asia.

Pinoysoccer.com dumps Lapu-Lapu, 20-0

POWERHOUSE Pinoysoccer.com flexed its muscle early and dumped FC Inter Lapu-Lapu, 20-0, in the first day of the 8th Cebu Inter club Men’s Open at the University of San Carlos Technological Center field yesterday.

With eight of its players named to the Cebu All-Stars, which lost 0-6 to the RP national team last Sunday, Pinoysoccer.com could have showed up minus a keeper, a defender or two to make yesterday’s game against Inter Lapu-Lapu more interesting.

Instead, the team, led by Oliver Colina, Eleazar Toledo, Lemar Baunsit and Kim Relucio among others, only needed 10 minutes to open the floodgates.

Palaro update

The high school team has just defeated Davao, 2-1, to advance to the finals against West Visayas.  Barring any hitches from the officials, this could be an interesting final.

The elementary squad will play NCR again in the final, a team they beat 4-1, in their early meeting. Cebu City got to the final after the Pampanga squad failed to show up.

Cebu City to lose CCSC; Pacquiao joins national team

Some six months from now, the Cebu City Sports Center will be no more.

With its football field resembling a beach, and its rubber oval getting as “rideable” as Hawaii’s waves, the Cebu City government will embark on a 35-million program–not to upgrade the 14-year-old edifice–but to construct a 20-story parking area right in the heart of the city.

Because of the worsening traffic situation in Cebu City make the already narrow streets too narrow, with cars parking all over the place, the new Cebu City Parking Area is expected to get swamped as parking will be banned all over downtown Cebu.
