Fair Play: State of the Oval, addressed

WITH the hullabaloo that the Cebu City Sports Center oval was getting, I thought, the best way to get to the bottom of things was to get the side of the subject, as any sane journalist should.

So yesterday, off I went for a chat with the 14-year-old edifice. I asked permission from CCSC manager Ricky B, but he just stared at me and locked his door when I left.

Still, it didn’t stop me. Permission be damned—a sports editor can get away with lots of things you know—I introduced myself to the Eight Lanes.

And boy, did I get a mouthful from the Eight!

“The nerve…Idiot…We have nothing to say but thank you very much…Get your feet off me before I whup you…Crazy…No comment!!!”

I reasoned and cajoled, “Don’t you want to air your side?”

“You’re one to talk about maintenance,” said Lane One, “You don’t even pay when you use us.”

Freeloader!”

To get their side, I knew I had to be honest. So I admitted flashing my press card the one time I ran at the oval.

“Just one time? How about badminton? You always ask for a discount or free use!” One was still adamant, “Who’s paying you to write this?”

Crazy freeloading media guy!”

It went on. One kept his accusations, while Crazy Two kept haranguing.

Finally, after an hour, I got them to talk.

I said, “They are planning to replace you, they say you can’t hack it anymore and you don’t even look the part.”

“Duh!” Lane Three, who sounded a bit like Friends’ Chandler, said, “We’re public property! Who respects public properties?”

“Crazy freeloading stupid media guy!”

But what about misuse? I continued, “You weren’t built for hosting Sinulogs, Alay Lakad or concerts. You are a track oval.”

Lane Five answered, ”As long as they respect the rules. It’s all about the rules. See that dude over there. There’s a big sign that says only rubber shoes are allowed yet he’s wearing what? Every day, hundreds of illegal shoes stamp us. Smoking? Don’t get me started, sometimes I feel like an ashtray…”

“And one time,” Lane Six interjected, “There was this woman wearing heels. I really didn’t mind because of her legs…”

“For the last time, she got cajones and was a HE!” Four interrupted, “Like you said, we are a track oval, but look around. Who’s running? Who’s playing football, badminton, baseball, judo, karatedo or just sitting, idling?”

“Crazy freeloading stupid leggy media guy with no cajones!!!”

“Please, stop calling me crazy, I’m having a conversation,” I lashed at Two, but Four explained, “You have to excuse Two, he was never the same after Their Honors _____ and ____ walked on him during the Sea Games.”

“Ooh, I see,” then continued, “How do you feel about getting replaced? You got bulges and all and can’t even host a national meet.”

Then, Lane Seven said, “Mister, do you dig graves and wonder why skeletons have no faces? Our lifespan is 10 years, we are 14.”

Eight, who was silent since the start, said, “These are all talk. Weren’t you the one who wrote about our sad state in 2001?”

“Yes,” I said.

“And again in 2005?”

“Yes.”

“Nothing happened, while you, you stamped your cigarette butts with illegal shoes on us, weeks after writing about our sorry state, didn’t you?”

I said nothing.

“Look at us, we’re wrinkled, we’re supposed to be. We’ve served our purpose. People are healthier because of us. You cry foul for every sports center that becomes a white elephant and here you are, crying foul because we look this way? Puh-lease,” Eight (I couldn’t believe I was hearing this from a rubber oval!)—continued, “Talk is cheap. Replace us, if you must. Now if you can. But if you can’t, leave us be.”

I couldn’t let a freakin’ oval get the better of me so I said…

However, I was interrupted.

“Dude,” said Four, “Here comes Ricky B with guys from the mental ward, I think you better scram!”

“Crazy running scamming media guy!”

The San Roque P20 football raffle

Quick.

The San Roque Football Club has stumbled into something unique.

In the waning days of summer, just as you’d be lucky to catch a local game being played, the San Roque Football Club put on a P20 football raffle.

Just show up, pay your P20 registartion fee and boom. You get to play. Not a bad idea.

And if you have an axe to grind against a neighbor, forget about it, chances are you’d end up playing together.

In their one-day fiesta last Sunday, you don’t choose who to play for, nor does anyone for that matter. Every member is raffled off to a team.

Here are the pics.

AFTER improving 11 places to 184th last month, the Philippines rose to 171st in the final FIFA rankings for 2006.

The Philippines, which lost one and won three matches in the Asean Football Federation Championships last month in Bacolod City, is now the seventh-best team in Southeast Asia, besting Vietnam (172), Cambodia (174) Brunei, 175 and Timor Leste (198)

Don Bosco holds Crazy Horse, 1-1

DON Bosco Alumni FC needed only one chance and a lot of luck to hold leaders Crazy Horse FC to a 1-1 draw in yesterday’s Aboitiz Premier League at the San Roque parish football grounds.

The draw kept Crazy Horse from solidifying its hold of the top spot going into the three-week Christmas break as it failed to win for the first time this season.

Both Don Bosco and Crazy Horse now share a 3-1 win-draw record, with Crazy Horse ahead by three goals in the standings.

In the other games yesterday, Dexter Arrojado carried Queen City to its third win, 1-0, over the luckless University of San Jose-Recoletos, while the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USPF) drew with San Roque FC, 1-1, and Wild Cebu Fashion banked on a last minute goal to oust Magone, 2-1.

Queen City is now at third with nine points, while both USPF and San Roque have four points. It was the first win for Wild Cebu, while Magone dropped its fourth straight match.

Crazy Horse started with their usual pace and systematic attacks yesterday, and Hayato Ayabe brought the Japanese-owned club upfront with a perfect header in the 17th.

Ayabe deftly headed in Matsuo Tsunakiri’s cross past Lark Pacubas to the left post for the first goal.

However, Don Bosco’s lone clear attack in the first half paid dividends as Ramon Martin stripped defender Kim Relucio of the ball then streaked towards the goal before blasting a left-footed strike to the top left corner in the 30th, leaving keeper Peter Onde no chance to stop the equalizer.

Crazy Horse, which whipped Queen City, 5-0, for its third win, tried to score the go ahead goal in the second half but found themselves unlucky.

A potential go ahead in the 70th got called off for offside, while Albert Nangkil’s 30-yard strike slipped through Pacuabas hands, flirted at the goal line before the keeper collected it.

Don Bosco found themselves a man down after Lemar Baunsit got his second yellow, but despite dominating ball possession, Crazy Horse couldn’t get the second goal.

Ayabe again came close late in the game, but his booming 20-yard volley sailed just wide and Don Bosco contended themselves to play defense to collect the point.

After the Christmas Break, Crazy Horse can shoot for their fourth win against San Roque, which won only one of its first four matches, while Don Bosco will take on USPF.

The football year ender.

The football year in 2006 started with a brawl…it ends (or rather a week before it ends) with postponed matches due to seniang.

We have all heard about the brawl and we all know who to blame. The brawlers are innocent, its not their fault. Its the organizers, its the weather, its traffic, its the media, its the janitors, its my cousin off the my mothers uncle to the third degree fault.

Cebu had festivals, Cebu had cheating teams. So what?

What’s the biggest story f the year?

What is your biggest story of the year?

Here are mine, and this is ranked.

1.) The Philippines, Azkals, (I remember being asked by the Solar guys why the RP team is named Azkals) winning three of four matches and finishing second. That, my friend, hasnt happened since old guy Ferdy Marcos was running in shorts. The starting keeper for that team is a Cebuano.

2.) The aboitiz festival. What ever side of the football fence you sit, you can’t take away from the CebuFA admin the success (here i qualify success with the number of participants) of the Aboitiz festival.

3.) The U17 regional fiasco. I wasn’t around to witness the match, as I went home to fulfill a high school promise (Yes, promises are meant to be fulfilled, not publicized in the papers) to attend a friend’s wedding. Such wedding coincided with the U17 regionals. I never expected Cebu to win, but I never expected, also, for Cebu to lose that badly.

4.) The SRP lie. You heard it before, you heard it then. The football field in SRP will rise.

5.) The DBC snub. You are the Palaro champion, you are so good. So good that a diffrent guideline is used for the football MOA. If you want to explore this thought, how about this. What right does a group have of criticizing the selection for the national team—presumably the best players in the country—if they can not, within themselves agree on the CRITERIA on selecting the best player for elementary football?

6.) Here is where you make your list. Adios

No love for RP from FIFA

Ever since I got back from Bacolod for the AFF Qualifiers I’ve been checking and rechecking the FIFA website for improvements of our rankings. Today is Dec. 11, almost two weeks since the final match of the Asiad.

What, dear FIFA, has said about us in their rankings?

It says that we, the Philippines have earned…drum roll please…34 points for the month of November.

At first I thought, there must have been a mistake, 34 points for three wins and a 1-2 loss? The first update of the FIFA rankings was done on Nov. 28, a week after the AFF qualifiers ended. I got a text from PFF about the new rankings, but, I already wrote a story about the rankings a day prior and asked “how come we got 34 measly points?”

I was told, that the last two games of RP wasn’t included in the new computation.

But check this, as of Dec 6, the new rankings released by FIFA, we still have 34 points!

*Until this day, the Philippines is still at 184th

IF you check the rankings, the Philippines earned, for their troubles, 34 points. As to our neighbors?

Cambodia, which won one lousy match, lost to the Philippines 0-1 and finished second at the bottom, earned 48 points and improved seven places to 178th.

Brunei? The country we beat 4-1, with del Rosario scoring that superb goal off a free kick from 30 yards, that rich nation earned 72 points to go up 13 places at 167.

As to the Philippines, FIFA gave us 34 points for our troubles thank you very much.

Now, the question is. Are the final two matches of the Philippines included in the new rankings?

Heck, the last report on the rankings was dated Dec. 6.

I’ve never been a soft drinks guy, I stopped drinking Coke two years ago. Maybe it’s time that I tell my friends to shift to Pepsi. Coke not only eskews your appetite. It seems, it also screws your arithmetic.
